The Wine Cellars
On the Friday evening of the summer camp participants will be divided into small groups and instead of dinning at the venue will be given the opportunity to go to the wine cellars of local farmers the "Eights". Here you will have the chance to eat some locally produced food, including a variety of cured meats, salamis and vegetables. The wines produced in this part of Slovenia include; Chardonnay, Zelen (a special variety from the Primorska province), Sauvignon, Sweet Yellow Muscat, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and many more. You may also be able to take home a bottle or two of wine from the cellar of the farmer!
Visits to Neighbouring Villages and
Places of Interest
Vilenica Caves, Feengrotte
The Vilenica Cave lies near the village of Lokev in the far west of Slovenia.
Until the middle of 19th century Vilenica had the reputation of being the largest most beautiful and most frequented cave in the central Karst.
The cave, which in bygone centuries triggered the imagination of visitors, is believed by locals to be the home of good fairies and this is how Vilenica got its name ("vile" is the Slovene word for fairies).
Today the cave is fully illuminated and some 450 meters of the more than 1.3km of galleries are open to the public. A guided tour lasts about an hour and should consist of two groups maximum.
Brje: Nečilčeva cave
This cave is located under the village of Brje. It is an attraction because of its numerous stalactites. Once inside you will be overwhelmed by the exceptional underground shapes. The cave is located 80 meters above
sea level and it is 747 meters long. A visit for groups of up to 10 people takes 2-3 hours. This cave is more for enthusiasts and demands entrance. This 600 m long cave is closest to the camp.
Additional Notes
The vice president of the Slovenian Cave Research Association, Rosana Rijaven, is going to take us to two of the caves. He especially suggests for the Brje Cave to bring old clothes with long sleeves since it is going to be very muddy.
Participants who wish to go to either of these
caves will need warmer clothing as the temperature in both caves is around 12 degrees Celsius.
Postojna Cave
Postojna Cave is over one hundred years old, and has been attracting visitors since its discovery. There are many passages and chambers to navigate your way through, packed with stalactites and stalagmites and pillars formed when the two combine. The folds of the calcite curtains and the other sequences form fantastic shapes.
There are many special geological features of the cave, for example the creatures living underground that have adapted to life in eternal darkness.
Škocjan Caves
The Škocjan Caves are a system of limestone caves located in the south west of Slovenia. There are approximately 5km of underground passages some of which are more than 200m deep. This is one of the most famous sites in the world for the study of karstic (limestone) phenomena.
Three thousand years ago this region was one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in Europe. In the Mediterranean it was of important cult significance, and was connected with the afterlife and communication to the spirits of the ancestors.
The Isonzo Frontline
The battles of the Isonzo (Soča) are so called because the battles were fought along the Isonzo River on the eastern sector of the Italian Front between June 1915 and November 1917. Today the Isonzo is located in present day Slovenia.
Since WWI the towns have been rebuilt and the battlefields have grown over, however remainders of the war are still visible. For example the military cemeteries, monuments, and trenches.
