Alojz Peterle
Is currently a Member of the European Parliament for the Slovenian Nova Slovenija Party in the EPP-ED group. He is also a presidential candidate for the next presidential elections in Slovenia this autumn.
From 1989 Peterle was a Member of the State Legislative Leaders Foundation. In 1990 until 1992 he became the Prime Minister of Slovenia and then between 1993 and 1994 the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. He also briefly held the position of Foreign Minister in 2000.
In 1996 he became the first Vice-President of the European Union of Christian Democrats, he held this position until 1999. Then in 2003 he became an Observer in the European Parliament. He has sat on and chaired many committees within the EP including the European Affairs Committee (1997-2004); the Constitutional Commission (1996-2004); the Foreign Policy Committee (1996-2004); and the Defence Committee (1996-2003).
Alojz Peterle was the President of the Slovenski krščanski demokrati (Slovenian Christian Democrats) from 1989 until 2000, and has been Chairman of the Council of Nova Slovenija since 2000.
In 2003 Peterle was awarded European of the year.
